Courthouse Closes After Lawyer Walks in Swarming with Bed Bugs: 'I Don't Even Think He Cared'
The unidentified lawyer was covered in so many of the parasites that they fell from his clothing.
While there are lawyers who have come to the defense of bed bug infestations victims, it’s not every day that a lawyer becomes the source of the parasitic infestation.
On Monday, the Rogers County Courthouse in Oklahoma was evacuated after an attorney arrived with an “abundance” of bed bugs crawling on him, NewsOn6 reported. The unidentified lawyer was covered in so many of the parasites that they fell from his clothing as he walked around a third-floor courtroom.
“A courthouse user noticed them and said she could visibly see something crawling on his neck, which was later found to be bed bugs,” Scott Walton of the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office told the news outlet.
“He had also placed his jacket over some file folders, and when his jacket was moved, bed bugs were discovered there,” the sheriff added.
Officials did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Horrifyingly enough, Walton said it’s unlikely that the lawyer was unaware of the bugs, whose bites can leave painful rashes anywhere on the body.

“Hard to imagine someone doesn’t know, you know, that some bed bugs are crawling all over them, certainly in abundance,” he said.
The surprising sight prompted the courthouse to completely shut down for the day to allow exterminators to kill the parasites.
“We’ve evacuated for fire alarms and bomb threats but never to my knowledge for bed bugs,” the courthouse’s head of security, Mike Clarke, told NewsOn6. “This is my first experience I’ve had with them.”
The building was reopened the following morning. As of now, it is unclear whether the lawyer or the city will cover the bill for the exterminators.
“I don’t even think he cared,” Clarke said of the lawyer.
Recently, there have been a few high-profile lawsuits centered on bed bug infestations. In April, a southern California family was awarded $1.6 million after they endured a months-long bed bug infestation that left a young boy with scars all over his body.
In June of the same year, a Brazilian model launched a lawsuit against a California hotel after alleging she was bitten across her entire body while staying in a bed bug-infested room in 2016.
In both cases, the victims hired attorney Brain Virag, who specializes in bed bug litigation through his firm, My Bed Bug Lawyer.
